ABSTRACT:
The research purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate an educational program that fosters digital citizenship for middle school students through problem-based learning in the metaverse. To achieve this purpose, this study follows the ADDIE model. This involved textbook analysis, learner interviews, lesson planning, instructional design, development of Metaverse content and activity sheets, pilot test, and expert review. The program was then implemented over two weeks period with third grade middle school students. To verify the effectiveness, we analyzed the difference between pre- and post-test digital citizenship using a paired sample t-test, and found that the digital citizenship of the students improved statistically significantly. Moreover, the analysis of reflection journals analyzed learning experiences concerning digital literacy, digital ethical problem-solving, digital responsibility, digital self-identity and digital emotional intelligence. Based on the research results, the significance of the M-PBL digital citizenship education program was discussed, and suggestions for future research were provided.
